I had a MacBook Pro that I absolutely loved. I got it right when I started dating my now wife and both have been always by my side everywhere I go.
Thankfully my wife is sturdier than the computer and after 6 years the beloved MBP’s life got to a halt. Its fans make more noise than a harrier about to take off.
As the machine was losing its structural integrity from shaking so much, I quickly wondered about what would happen should it died on me right here and then. I happily came to the conclusion that the worse end game would be spending time reinstalling a few software on a new machine, which I am doing now.
I did not have to worry about the data part. One of our motto at Pyramedium/PyraSolutions is to "eat our own food" meaning we use the software we sell to our customers and, since we are a software as a service company, try to use the cloud as much as possible.
This means that we do not have any mission critical files located on a single machine. In case of a crash, or in a much nicer scenario when bringing someone on-board, we can quickly resume our operations on a new machine.
As I am going through the re-install process, I thought it would be a great opportunity to share some of the cloud-based technologies we use as it may come in handy for some of you when your computers drop on you (usually when you need them most):
- All our website management, along with checklists, time tracking, project tracking, some billing + invoicing, and communication is done through our Software, www.pyrasolutions.com
- Our code is version controlled on BitBucket so at worse we lose 1/2 day of work I guess if a machine dies on the spot without any recovery hope!
- For our documents we use a mix of different online storage companies. Obviously Google Doc is great, though for some others DropBox is starting to grow on me quite a bit.
- All our payroll is done online.
While I truly understand how some people can be concerned about their data being “in-the-cloud”, there is a level of convenience and comfort that comes along with such a setup. We can deploy quickly and also not worry about backup and recoveries.
Of course I’ll try and fix the MBP...some things you just don’t let go of!
